A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Mass Book Review

For a long while people have been talking about Sarah J Maas and I wished I had jumped on the bandwagon sooner! I read ACOTAR for the first time last year and quickly fell in love with the unique world and characters found between it’s pages. I decided to read the whole series again, and thus, you get a review.

This book focus on Feyre, who has kept her family safe, warm, and fed. Her mother died years ago and her father became crippled and lost his fortune. Now, braving the cold, dangerous forest, Feyre hunts for her family. While there, she spots a wolf, the biggest wolf she’s ever seen. Her thoughts wander to the fae who had so badly hurt her land, and she couldn’t pass the opportunity up.

However, killing something so precious comes at a price… A Fae comes to take her to his magical land as a way to pay the debt. There’s something interesting about her captor, Tamlin, a jewelled mask is stuck on his face that he cannot remove, and behind it might hide so much more than she’d guess.

As she dwells in his court, she slowly sees him less as the monster she thought he was and something bigger might be going on…

The fact that I didn’t realize this was a retelling of Beauty and The Beast makes me feel so dumb. Especially after writing this summary. Reading it the second time, I can clearly see the elements throughout and how even pieces of Cinderella’s story were thrown in.

OKAY, so the writing in this story is beautiful. The first line alone is enough to draw you in and captivate you. Maas keeps the story going with complex characters, subtle wonder, deep emotions, and beautiful descriptions.

And let me tell you, there is not a character you won’t like for their role as a character (trust me, there’s a few I hate for who they are, but not for how they were written. Kinda like Snape – love his complexity and what he added to the story, still think he was a trash human). There is so much to everyone and they’re written so incredibly well I never once thought they weren’t real. Rhysand was so interesting in this book. I’m so glad he’s in book two, because I was so curious about him by the end of ACOTAR. Tamlin. Mmm, what I could say about him. Feyre is perfect. She has flaws and strengths that make her so human. Even her sisters were well written, and seemed to have more to them than just what was written on the surface, despite not having that much page time.

The plot is amazing too. It’s so much more deeper than just a romance. There’s mystery, wonder, pain, suspense, and magic. It has the perfect ending and trust me, you’ll want to read the sequel after this, as Feyre’s story continues and such an unexpected, but incredible journey.

I want to say SO much but I can’t without spoiling this story and diving into the next books. I have so much love for this series I could discuss it for many more paragraphs that’d you’d eventually get tired of reading. So if you’re wondering if A Court of Thorns and Roses is really that good, then this is your sign. IT IS. Stop being a dummy and putting it off and pick of the book and experience the beauty within!
